Juan Pierre Re-Signs with Marlins

Even with the looming mega-trade between Miami and Toronto still unconsummated, the Marlins have signed a new centerfielder for 2013. Juan Pierre, who played for the Fish between 2003 and 2005, will rejoin the team for the coming season.

Pierre signed a one year, $1.6 million deal to roam the vast, Marlins Park centerfield. He will provide the offensive speed for the team, who is set to give up both Jose Reyes and Emilio Bonifacio in the imminent trade with the Blue Jays. Last season, Pierre played for the Phillies, batting .307 and stealing 37 bases. His 591 career swipes ranks first among all active major leaguers.

The current plan is to let Pierre man centerfield until Christian Yelich, the top draft pick several years ago for the marlins, becomes seasoned enough to play in the bigs.
