The Marlins signed veteran pitcher John Maine to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training over the weekend. Maine gained notoriety as a stalwart performer for the Mets before injuries and inconsistencies hindered his career in 2009. He has posted a 41-36 career record, having last pitched in the Majors back in 2010. Miami is looking to add experience to their inordinately young rotation, which was diluted in November’s fire sale.
Having grown up in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Maine is more or less a hometown hero for my city, as he is the only current Major League Baseball player originally from the area.
