The Marlins’ upper management thought it was time for a change after the team was swept over the weekend without plating a single run, so on Monday they called up top outfield prospects Christian Yelich and Jake Marisnick. Subsequently, Derek Dietrich and Marcell Ozuna were sent down to Double-A Jacksonville.
Yelich was Florida’s first-round pick in 2010, and Marisnick was the top prospect acquired in November’s blockbuster trade with Toronto. They will start in left and center field respectively tonight in Colorado. Yelich will wear jersey number 21, and Marisnick 23.
As for the two demoted, both Dietrich, who started at second base for a significant period of time, and Ozuna, who played centerfield, were “rushed” to the big leagues, according to Larry Beinfest. Both exceeded expectations during their short tenure this season in Miami, and have bright futures with the club.
