Ah, October…my birth month of lovely weather, pumpkin beyond measure, and the best Marlins-less baseball this world has to offer.
Last October, I wrapped up the Taylor Swift’s MLB saga and predicted a very strange way that the Cubs would eventually return to the World Series. This year, the Cubs lead off the best of October with…
1) HISTORY!! It’s not every day that you get to witness an event that hasn’t occurred for 71 years. Today, the Chicago Cubs are playing in the World Series for the first time since 1945. As has been widely brought up by Marlins media, the main story line of the 2016 World Series would not exist if it weren’t for those meddling Marlins…
2) The main story line, of course, is the matchup of historic losers Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs. The Cubs haven’t won the World Series since 1908, and hadn’t won the National League since 1945 until Saturday. But in 2003, the Cubs had a 3-1 lead on the Marlins in the NLCS before Florida came back to win.
Cleveland has not brought home a World Series title since 1948, but the Indians lost to the Marlins in a walk-off in game seven of the 1997 World Series. Speared! So yes, that’s what Craig Counsell and Louis Castillo have to do with the 2016 World Series…
3) Which is a popular topic here on the University of Dayton’s campus. Dayton is strategically-placed within a few hours’ car journey of both Cleveland and Chicago, and draws students from both areas very well.
It brightens my soul to see baseball as popular as it is among the youth, and even though I have no emotional attraction to either team, I love seeing students sport Indians or Cubs jerseys and caps. America’s pastime is alive and well! That’s one thing that makes Dayton great…
4) Basketball season is another! Both the men’s and women’s Flyers teams scrimmaged this past weekend and play exhibition games next week. It’s getting real here in the media world on campus, so I’m looking forward to covering college basketball for Flyer News and bringing the people all that Flyer basketball has to offer! Newspapers aren’t dead either, but I was most excited this month by…
5) Global Radio!!! Paul and I made our global radio debut on EWTN earlier this month when we were guests of our high school chaplain, Father Lundberg, on a radio show called Morning Glory. Paul and I chatted about our media jobs at college and how we love bringing the truth to the world through writing, radio, and television. It was awesome to be in a real radio studio after Paul and I rudimentarily experimented with our podcast aspirations a few years ago.
Here’s a link to our guest appearance:
And that is why October has been a great month of baseball, media, history, and everything in between.
Originally, I predicted the Cubs to win the World Series, but I really like Cleveland’s pitching so I’ll take the Indians in seven.
So long for just a while.
